The Ultimate Sahara Trek (Erg Chebbi)

Embark on a breathtaking journey across the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco’s most iconic Sahara landscapes.

The Ultimate Sahara Trek (Erg Chebbi)

Tour Overview

Go beyond the overnight camp for a true immersion into the high dunes of Erg Chebbi. This isn’t just a quick camel ride; it’s a multi-day trek that explores the varying landscapes surrounding Merzouga, including the deep dunes, nomadic black desert (Hamada), and hidden oases. Led by expert local guides, you will experience the stillness of the Sahara, sleep under a phenomenal sky full of stars, and learn about the unique culture and life of the Berber nomads.

This tour is a medium-duration, immersive, and active exploration of the desert region. A typical duration is 3 Days and 2 Nights starting from Merzouga, or a 4-Day, 3-Night trip if departing from Marrakech. The focus is on multi-day trekking (either on foot, camel, or 4×4) and cultural interaction away from the main tourist routes.

  • Focus: Desert geology, deep dune exploration, Berber nomadic culture, and stargazing.

  • Experience: Camel trekking, hiking/sandboarding on the highest dunes, 4×4 off-roading, and campfire music.

  • Best For: Adventurers, photographers, and travelers willing to endure long travel days for a rewarding, deep desert experience.

This is a focused, active 3-Day, 2-Night trek (excluding travel to/from Marrakech).

The grade is Moderate/Challenging due to the time spent outdoors and physical activity involved in hiking sand dunes.

The main highlight is the Deep Immersion in the Erg Chebbi Dunes, including cultural interaction with local nomads.

Accommodation includes two (2) nights in Desert Bivouacs/Camps (with options for Standard or Luxury tents).

Day 1: Merzouga Dunes and Nomadic Camp

Upon arrival in Merzouga, you will meet your local guide and prepare for the trek. We begin in the late afternoon with a camel trek directly into the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi. After reaching a high dune to witness a spectacular desert sunset, we proceed to a secluded, traditional Berber camp nestled deep within the sands. Dinner is served under the stars, followed by local drum music around the campfire.

We wake early to see the sunrise before enjoying breakfast. Today is dedicated to exploring the diverse desert environment. We will utilize a combination of camel riding, walking, and 4×4 transport. Activities include a visit to a seasonal oasis (like Dayet Srji, if conditions allow), a drive through the rocky black desert (Hamada) to visit a genuine nomadic family for tea, and listening to traditional Gnaoua music in the village of Khamlia. The afternoon may include sandboarding on the dunes. We return to a different, perhaps more luxurious, desert camp for the second night.

After witnessing a final desert sunrise and enjoying breakfast, we trek by camel (or take a 4×4) back to Merzouga village. There is time for a shower and final preparation before your private or group transfer departs for your next destination (Marrakech, Fes, or Errachidia Airport).

The Ultimate Sahara Trek package typically includes:

  • Accommodation: Two (2) nights’ accommodation in a Desert Camp (private tent with bedding provided).

  • Guidance: Services of an experienced local Berber Desert Guide and camel handler for the entire trek duration.

  • Meals: Full Board (FB) basis throughout the trek: 2x Breakfasts, 2x Lunches, and 2x Dinners while in the desert environment.

  • Activities: All scheduled activities, including the Camel Trekking, the desert 4×4 excursions on Day 2, sandboarding equipment, and cultural visits (nomads/Gnaoua).

  • Water: Clean drinking water provided during the trek days.

Sahara Desert (Merzouga & Erg Chebbi) Trip: Your Questions Answered

The trek involves walking on sand, which is physically demanding. While the camels handle most of the distance, there will be opportunities for hiking up the tallest dunes. A good level of walking fitness is recommended, but the pace is set to the group’s comfort.

Standard Camps offer private tents but usually have shared restroom facilities, and you shower later at a hotel back in Merzouga. Luxury Camps offer larger tents with en-suite private bathrooms (flush toilet and hot shower) and a generally higher level of catering and amenities.

Evenings and nights in the desert are extremely cold, particularly from October to May. You must pack warm layers, a fleece, and a warm hat. While blankets are provided, a sleeping bag or liner is highly recommended for added comfort and warmth during the coldest months.

Your driver gets you to Merzouga. Once you enter the dunes, you are guided by specialist local Berber guides and camel handlers who live in the desert and have generations of knowledge about the dunes and local routes.

This depends on the camp type. Luxury Camps generally have solar power allowing you to charge devices in your tent. Standard Camps may only have charging available in the communal area for a limited time in the evening.
