The route focuses on traversing the dramatic High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass and navigating the historic Road of 1,000 Kasbahs. Key cultural highlights include the iconic, UNESCO-listed Aït Benhaddou and the geological wonders of the Dades and Todra Gorges. The adventure culminates with an unforgettable camel trek and an overnight stay in the vast dunes of Erg Chebbi, providing a perfect blend of ancient history, dramatic landscapes, and Saharan immersion.
Day 1: Marrakech to the Road of 1,000 Kasbahs
The journey begins with a scenic drive from Marrakech, climbing over the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), the highest major road pass in North Africa, offering incredible panoramic views. We descend from the mountains to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aït Benhaddou, the famous fortified mud-brick village that has served as a setting for many major films. After a walking tour of the ksar, we continue to Ouarzazate (Africa’s Hollywood) before proceeding along the iconic Road of 1,000 Kasbahs. We conclude the day with a comfortable overnight stay in a traditional guesthouse or hotel near the Dades Valley.
Day 2: Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge & Desert Gateway
Today is dedicated to exploring the region’s geological wonders. We start with a drive through the unique formations of the Dades Gorge, taking a short walk to admire the dramatic landscapes, including the distinctive “Monkey Fingers” rock features. Next, we proceed to the truly breathtaking Todra Gorge, where sheer, massive 300m cliffs narrow to a small passage, allowing for an easy and highly scenic guided walk along the riverbed. In the afternoon, we drive east toward the edge of the true Sahara, stopping to explore a traditional oasis and witnessing the landscape transform from rugged stone to vast, sandy plains as we reach the gateway town of Merzouga.
Day 3: Sahara Immersion & Erg Chebbi Dunes
This is the climax of the desert experience. In the late afternoon, we meet our caravan and embark on a magical sunset camel trek into the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi. After a 1 to 1.5 – hour ride, we arrive at our secluded desert camp. Here, a traditional Moroccan dinner is served, followed by an evening of local Berber music and drumming under the incredible expanse of the starry desert sky. The overnight stay in the tent camp provides a deep sense of peace and solitude.
Day 4: Sunrise & Return to Marrakech
We wake before dawn to climb the nearest high dune, guaranteeing a spectacular view of the Sahara sunrise over the rolling sandscape. After enjoying breakfast at the camp, we either take a final camel ride or a short 4×4 transfer back to Merzouga village. From there, we begin the long, full-day scenic return journey back to Marrakech, crossing the plains and the High Atlas Mountains once more. We arrive back in Marrakech in the late afternoon/early evening.
