this 4-day expedition is a journey into morocco’s deep imperial past, connecting the southern capital of marrakech with the northern imperial city of meknes and the spiritual heart, fes. the tour focuses on visiting meknes, once the magnificent capital of sultan moulay ismaïl, where you will explore its massive gates (like bab mansour) and vast granaries. a key feature is the visit to the nearby ancient roman ruins of volubilis (a unesco world heritage site). the trip requires significant driving to cover the historical landscape but provides an unparalleled view of morocco’s imperial heritage.

arrival at marrakech menara airport (rak). you will be met and transferred privately to your riad or hotel. depending on your flight schedule, the afternoon offers an opportunity for initial exploration of the city, perhaps a walk to see the exterior of the koutoubia mosque and a first visit to the famous jamaa el-fna square as it comes alive at sunset. dinner and overnight stay will be in marrakech.

 

an early morning departure is necessary for the long transfer north to fes (approximately 7–8 hours of driving). the journey is scenic, involving long stretches of highway and passing through portions of the middle atlas mountains, offering a chance to see the changing moroccan landscape. stops for rest and lunch are made along the way. you will arrive in fes in the late afternoon or early evening. dinner and overnight stay will be in a traditional riad located in the fes medina.

 

 

this day is dedicated to imperial history. in the morning, you will take an excursion to the imperial city of meknes (approx. 1-hour drive). you will explore the city’s highlights, including the colossal bab mansour gate, the royal stables, and the vast heri es-souani granary. following this, you will visit the spectacular ancient roman ruins of volubilis (a unesco world heritage site). in the afternoon, you will return to fes for a guided exploration of the fes medina, including the intricate bou inania madrasa and a visit to the city’s historic tanneries. dinner and overnight stay are in fes.

 

after a final breakfast in fes, you begin the return transfer back south to marrakech (a long drive of approximately 7–8 hours). this route completes the imperial loop and provides a final opportunity to observe the diverse moroccan scenery. stops for lunch and rest are scheduled along the way. you will arrive in marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening for drop-off at your hotel or transfer to marrakech menara airport (rak) for your departure.

Before You Go: Fes & Meknes Logistics

days 2 and 4 are very long travel days (7–8 hours each) as you must cover the distance between marrakech and fes/meknes. the travel is mostly comfortable highway driving. 

volubilis is the best-preserved ancient roman archaeological site in morocco, famous for its detailed mosaic floors and historical significance. 

typically, a local official city guide is included for the fes medina tour and the key sites in meknes/volubilis on day 3. 

accommodation is usually in highly-rated riads or hotels in the medinas of marrakech and fes, offering a traditional moroccan experience. 

generally, breakfast is included daily. lunch and dinner are usually excluded to allow you freedom to choose where and when you eat in the cities.
