Erg Chigaga Desert Expedition (Via M'hamid)

Tour Overview

(4 Days / 3 Nights Recommended)

This expedition requires more time than the trip to Erg Chebbi due to the remote location of the dunes (which are only accessible by 4×4 after M’hamid). It is the premium desert experience, focused on solitude, dramatic landscapes, and the full journey through the Draa Valley.

  • Focus: The journey focuses on the historic Draa Valley route, visiting ancient ksars (fortified villages), driving spectacular desert tracks (the piste), and reaching the massive, wild dunes of Erg Chigaga—far from any roads or towns.

  • Experience: The pace is moderate, balancing the necessary long 4×4 transfers with cultural stops, short walks, and the climactic, immersive desert camp stay. The remoteness guarantees a powerful sense of silence and space.

  • Accommodation: A blend of traditional Kasbah stays in the Draa Valley and a premium, exclusive camp setting deep within the dunes.

Sahara Desert (Merzouga & Erg Chebbi) Trip: Your Questions Answered

What makes Erg Chigaga better than Erg Chebbi?

Erg Chigaga is significantly more remote and less accessible. It requires hours of 4×4 driving and has no nearby tarmac roads, ensuring total solitude and a genuine “end-of-the-road” wilderness feeling. The dunes here are also notably higher and wilder.

Absolutely. The 4×4 transfer is mandatory to reach Chigaga. Our experienced, licensed desert drivers are highly skilled in navigating the piste and dunes, ensuring a thrilling yet safe adventure.

The camel trek is typically timed for the sunset experience, lasting approximately 1 to 1.5 hours each way. This allows you to experience the dunes on foot and camel without excessive discomfort.

While possible, the long driving hours (especially Day 4) can be challenging. We recommend this specific remote itinerary for children aged 8 and up who are used to long car journeys.

Our camps are high quality. They feature private, fully functional ensuite bathrooms with flush toilets and showers. You will not be roughing it!
